Summer has Arrived
After a pleasant spring, the heat of summer is upon us.
Don’t get me wrong; heat in northern Alabama is nothing like heat in southeast Texas. But as I get older, I find that the heat bothers me more. For example, this morning I went outside to pick blueberries and pull a few weeds, hoping to get some chores accomplished before the temperatures rose too high.
Within 15 minutes, I was done.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t like the rewards of summer. I recently made a strawberry pie, which unfortunately was a disaster. So, a few days ago I headed to the local produce market and bought some peaches. While they aren’t at their peak yet, they did make a tasty cobbler (above). Which was made even better with vanilla ice cream.
My husband’s vegetable garden has provided us with cucumbers and peppers, with tomatoes up next. I have already made a delicious salad using these veggies and look forward to more later on.
My herbs are doing well, and I have added mint to iced tea, chives to corn soup, and parsley to smashed potatoes. So much fresher when you can pick them right from the garden.
Unless we have an exceptionally cool day, I plan to spend most of my time indoors for the foreseeable future. I have a quilt that I need to finish, and there is a weaving project waiting for my attention. Not to mention, lots of soccer/futbol games to watch!
I will not lack for things to do.
