"When This Old World Starts Getting Me Down"
I Head to the Garden
With everything that has been going on lately, sometimes it feels like it is all just too much (with thanks and apologies and credit to The Drifters).
So today, on this lovely sunny day with temperatures in the seventies, I put on my coveralls, rubber boots and sun hat and went out to play in the dirt.
First on the list was cleaning up one of the raised beds, pulling weeds and working in some compost. In about a month, I will make my first effort in planting the Three Sisters in this bed.
Several of the plants that had spent the winter in the greenhouse, mostly milkweed and lavender, were moved outdoors to harden off on another raised bed. Next, I brought out the snapdragon and cosmos seedlings I had started indoors under grow lights. They all got potted up, watered, and are happily ensconced in the greenhouse, since we have not yet passed the date of last frost.
And then all of the potted plants and recently started trees got a nice drink of water. It looks like the thyme, oregano, and mint are all beginning to grow a bit. The plum and apricot trees have lovely blossoms. More of the daffodils are blooming, the hyacinths are fragrant, and any day now the tulips will open. Hope springs eternal.
There are always chores to do in the garden. My efforts will not bring world peace or prevent bad things from happening to good people. But working hard did distract me from the uncertainty for a bit and help bring a sense of serenity to me in my little piece of the world.
